The San Francisco headquarters of the company formerly known as Twitter has removed a brightly flashing “X” sign just days after it was installed. The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection received 24 complaints about the unpermitted structure, citing concerns about its safety and illumination.
Owned by Elon Musk, the company has rebranded as X and had previously removed the Twitter sign and iconic blue bird logo from the building. This work was halted temporarily due to the lack of necessary permits. The city of San Francisco launched an investigation into the giant “X” sign, which was installed on top of the downtown building as part of Musk’s rebranding of the social media platform.
The chaotic rebranding of Twitter’s building signage reflects the haphazard way in which the platform itself is being transformed into X. Although the X logo has replaced Twitter on many parts of the site and app, remnants of Twitter still remain.
Representatives for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
