Top American player Taylor Fritz’s impressive seven-match winning streak came to an end in the semifinals of the D.C. Open on Saturday night. He was defeated by Tallon Griekspoor in three sets.
Griekspoor, ranked 37th in the world, achieved his first career win over a top 10 opponent in 10 attempts. This victory puts him in contention for his third ATP title of 2023 and his 28th match win of the year. Prior to this year, Griekspoor was ranked 153rd in the world.
Fritz, the world No. 9 and the top seed from Washington, was aiming for his second consecutive final after winning the Atlanta Open last week. Before this match, Fritz had only been broken twice in his previous 82 service games and only once in this tournament. Griekspoor managed to break Fritz three times, including twice in the decisive set, while facing only two break points throughout the entire match.
Griekspoor will face the winner of the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Daniel Evans in the finals. Evans eliminated local player Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals. Griekspoor’s win also means that Andy Roddick remains the last American man to win in Washington, achieving this feat in 2007.
