New Jersey regulators have taken action against 27 Boston Market locations after discovering that the company failed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in wages. The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development found “multiple violations of workers’ rights” at Boston Market locations in the state. The agency reported that the company owes over $600,000 in backpay to more than 300 workers. In addition, Boston Market has been fined $1.2 million in liquidated damages.
The agency has ordered the closure of the 27 stores, stating that they may only reopen if all remaining back wages, penalties, and related issues have been resolved. Failure to comply risks a daily fine of $5,000. The company has also been hit with $731,741 in administrative fees and penalties, bringing the total fines to almost $2.6 million.
These penalties conclude a nine-month investigation prompted by complaints from employees about unpaid wages. Several employees from Boston Market locations in New Jersey claimed that the company did not pay fair wages, failed to provide earned sick leave, and did not maintain accurate records of sick leave.
This latest round of fines adds to the chain’s growing list of difficulties. Boston Market is currently facing lawsuits from regulators and landlords who argue that the company has not paid its bills. Additionally, U.S. Foods has filed a lawsuit seeking $12 million, alleging that Boston Market has not made payments for the past two years.
