Coroner Determines Immigrant Girl’s Death on Chicago-Bound Bus from Texas Was Due to Infection and Other Factors

An autopsy conducted by an Illinois coroner has revealed that a 3-year-old girl’s death on a bus carrying immigrants from Texas to Chicago last month was caused by a bacterial infection and other factors. Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon stated that the girl, Jismary Alejandra Barboza González, suffered from aspiration pneumonia, diarrhea, and vomiting, which resulted in electrolyte problems and brain swelling. Her low weight and length for her age also contributed to her death.

The young girl had initially experienced mild symptoms and feeling unwell as her family boarded the bus in Brownsville, Texas. Despite having a low-grade fever at the time, she was allowed to continue the journey. However, her symptoms worsened during the trip, and she began experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and dehydration. As her condition deteriorated further, she struggled to breathe.

The bus was part of a program initiated by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, which involved transporting migrants to Democratic-led cities across the country. The girl’s family had embarked on their journey from Colombia in May.

It is always heartbreaking to hear about the loss of a young life. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by immigrants seeking a better future. It is essential for governments and organizations to prioritize the well-being and safety of individuals during such journeys.
