Hunter Biden Sues IRS for Alleged Unlawful Disclosure of Tax Information

Hunter Biden has filed a lawsuit against the IRS, accusing them of intentionally and repeatedly disclosing his tax returns and failing to protect the confidentiality of his tax documents.

In the lawsuit, Hunter Biden is seeking all documents related to the unauthorized disclosure of his tax information and is asking for $1,000 in damages for each unauthorized disclosure.

Just days before filing the lawsuit, Hunter Biden was indicted on three criminal counts related to the possession of a handgun while under the influence of illegal drugs.

Previously, Hunter Biden had reached a deal with prosecutors that would have spared him prison time if he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor tax charges. However, the agreement collapsed under the scrutiny of a federal judge.

The lawsuit, filed in the District of Columbia, specifically mentions two IRS agents, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, accusing them of publicly smearing Hunter Biden by disclosing his tax information in televised interviews, public statements, and congressional testimony.

Hunter Biden’s attorneys argue that the IRS employees and others involved in the disclosure of his tax information disregarded their obligations and violated the law.

The IRS has not commented on the pending litigation, and Mr. Shapley’s attorneys deny any wrongdoing, stating that the lawsuit is a smear tactic to divert attention away from Hunter Biden’s legal problems.

The lawsuit alleges that the two IRS agents’ whistleblower status does not shield them from their wrongful conduct in making unauthorized public disclosures.

In their testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, the two IRS agents claimed that the Biden administration interfered with the investigation into Hunter Biden’s alleged tax crimes and that there was corruption that hampered the investigation.

The prosecutors have stated that Hunter Biden had significant tax obligations for 2017 and 2018, with an income of $4.4 million for those two years. The exact tax bill remains uncertain due to ongoing investigations into improper business deductions.

Hunter Biden’s attorney admitted that his client mixed up personal and business expenses, leading to delinquency on his tax obligations in 2016 and 2019.

An unidentified “third party” paid $2.6 million to the IRS in October 2021 to settle Hunter Biden’s tax obligations for those years.

Overall, Hunter Biden’s earnings came from various sources, including his position on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings and Chinese investment and energy companies.

Prosecutors have claimed that he spent the money quickly, especially during his struggle with drug addiction, by using it for legal fees, travel, entertainment, and even a Porsche.
