A massive pumpkin weighing more than 1.3 tons has smashed the world record for the heaviest pumpkin at the 50th annual World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California.
Travis Gienger, the defending champion from Anoka, Minnesota, claimed victory once again with his 2,749-pound pumpkin named “Michael Jordan.” This surpassed the previous world record of 2,702 pounds set in 2021 by Italian grower Stefano Cutrupi. Gienger earned a prize of $30,000 for his impressive pumpkin.
Despite his previous success with record-breaking pumpkins, Gienger expressed surprise at breaking the world record this time. He has now won three out of the last four championships, securing his first win in 2020.
Gienger revealed that he does not weigh his entries before the contest, believing in the element of surprise and wanting people to experience a genuine reaction. He invested a significant amount of money, approximately $15,000, in the growth of his winning pumpkin.
The prize money for the competition is generously provided by sponsor Safeway.
On Saturday, “Michael Jordan” and Gienger will take part in a noontime parade as the highlight of the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival. The town will also showcase other top pumpkins throughout the weekend.
