Maryland Offers State-Funded Service Year Option for High School Graduates

High school graduates in Maryland now have the opportunity to participate in a public service year, thanks to state government funding. This initiative, announced by the office of Maryland Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat, is the first of its kind in the country.

Participants in the program will be placed in jobs that pay at least $15 an hour for a minimum of 30 hours per week. These jobs will also involve providing services to Maryland communities.

Additionally, Maryland residents of all ages can join the Maryland Corps, which offers placements in organizations that provide professional development, job training, and pay of at least $15 per hour.

Upon completion of their service, participants will receive $6,000 either as a direct payment or towards their education.

Various organizations, including nonprofits, private companies, Maryland public agencies, and schools, are accepting program participants. Graduates entering their service year will be placed based on their areas of interest.

In a statement, Governor Moore said, “By calling Marylanders to serve – and serve together – we will ensure our citizens develop skills to meet society’s needs.”
